Because she couldn’t bear the thought of old dogs dying alone, a pet lover converted her home into a hospice and now cares for up to 80 dogs at once.
Valerie Reid, 44, founded the non-profit Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary in Hermitage, Missouri, in 2017 after failing to find a home for her father’s elderly Doberman.
‘My husband and I were at our city’s pet limit and we were unable to take her,’ she recalled. We looked everywhere for a rescue that could help, but none would because of her age.’
Valerie now accepts dogs who have been in a shelter for a long time and whose owners have died or moved into a retirement facility.
