A team of archaeologists from the University of San Marcos in Lima has found a mummy in a perfect state of preservation in the archaeological complex of Cajamarquilla, east of the Peruvian capital.
According to the institution, these remains belong to a man, dating from pre-Inca times and found inside an oval underground structure, which had a platform on the north side.
The archaeologists specify that to access the mummy, a seven-step staircase had to be crossed.
But the discovery of the mummy is not the only thing that surprises us, but its appearance: it is in a fetal position, as if squatting, with its hands over its face and “covered with ropes”.
And that it is surrounded by ropes is no coincidence, since it is a burial custom or pattern, according to experts, which is typical of the high Andean region.
“The significance of this archaeological complex lies in its strategic location, as a control and means of interaction of interregional relations,”
They explained in a statement.“The whole team is really happy because we didn’t think this was going to happen,”
Yomira Huamán Santillán, also an archaeologist, assures CNN,
“We didn’t expect to make such an important discovery.”
And Van Dalen Luna adds that“The fact of finding a mummy with these characteristics in the middle of the square makes it clear that she is someone of high status,”
as she could be a major merchant today.
