For months, Josette Duran, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had been in a rather unconventional lunchbox prep routine.
Instead of giving her son, Dylan, just one lunch to take to school, the mum-of-one carefully prepared two delicious midday meals, which Dylan then packed away for later on.
While Ms Duran had no idea why her son needed double as much food as he used to in order to get through the school day, one day she said she stopped him and asked: ‘Are you not getting full, boo?.’
Dylan then told his mother why he wanted two lunches – he was eating one bagged lunch and giving the other to his friend.
‘Mom, it’s for this boy. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch. Can you make him lunch, too? I don’t think he has lunch money,’ the 14-year-old said.
‘I was totally shocked, I had no idea why I was making two lunches, I just did it,’ Ms Duran told Daily Mail.
After she found out that Dylan’s friend’s mother was a single parent who had recently lost her job, Ms Duran was totally touched by what her little boy wanted to do for his friend.
‘Dylan is too kind-hearted,’ the mother told Daily Mail.
‘He is my hero.’
When Dylan’s friend’s mum found out what was being done for her child, and tried to pay Ms Duran back for her kindness, the mother of one wouldn’t accept any money.
‘We were homeless for a period and as a result are rather soft hearted,’ she told Daily Mail.
Instead, the mum-of-one donated USD $400 which was raised by her girls’ volleyball team to the school cafeteria, so that no child would go hungry at lunchtime again.
Ms Duran later took to Facebook, to share her story, and since then it has been making waves around the world.
‘[I’m not doing this] for praise or anything; it’s pretty – it’s pretty intense,’ she said to camera in a Facebook live video – as she held back the tears.
The video has been shared and commented on around the globe, as people have been quick to comment on how heartwarming the story is.
